Role in Project: Project coordination, coordination of WP1 & WP6, participant in all other WPs

The Rural Sociology Group focuses on the complex whole of transformation processes in rural and metropolitan regions and in the food supply chain. In this, specific attention is paid to the different levels at which these transformation processes are shaped and to the different (rural and urban) actors and institutions involved. Research projects of the Rural Sociology Group are often of a multi-or inter-disciplinary nature, embody an international and comparative dimension and are, in many cases, carried out in close collaboration with (organizations of) stakeholders.

Profile of staff members working on the project: Prof. dr. ir. Han Wiskerke holds an MSc in plant sciences and a PhD in rural sociology. Since 2004 he is Professor of Rural Sociology and head of the Rural Sociology Group. His current research interests focus on the complex interplay between urbanization, healthy and sustainable urban meals and sustainable rural and regional development. Dr. ir. Bettina Bock holds an MSc and PhD in Rural Sociology. She is Associate Professor of Rural Sociology and specialized in agro-food and rural development studies, comparative health studies, human-animal relations and rural gender studies. Her current research interests focus on the relation between food, health and culture. Femke Hoekstra holds an MSc in Human Geography and an MA in Humanitarian Assistance from the University of Groningen. She joined the Rural Sociology group in 2011 as a PhD student and FOODLINKS research assistant involved in monitoring and evaluation of knowledge brokerage.
