Role in project: Coordination of WP5, participant in WPs 2, 4, 7 & 8

The School of City and Regional Planning (CPLAN) strives to be a centre of excellence in research, teaching and policy and practice, associated with the planning and management of cities and regions. Its staff take a wide definition of planning which encompasses the policy areas of economic development, environment, housing, urban design, transport, health as well as land-use planning. Our current and future plans involve closer links to external agencies and professions as an essential part of our knowledge and research base. In particular, the professions which we serve provide opportunities in local and strategic planning authorities, regional development agencies, central and devolved government, private planning and environmental consultancies, transport agencies and non-governmental organisations.

Profile of staff members working on the project

Prof. dr. Kevin Morgan is Professor of Governance and Development at the School of City and Regional Planning. His research interests revolve around three main themes: a)sustainable agri-food chains, with special reference to the role of creative public procurement, b) the role of cities and regions in regional development and c) the interplay of political devolution and economic development. He has written, advised and presented considerably in all three areas and acted as an advisor to a wide range of domestic and international food related organizations. Kevin Morgan was recently invited, along with Roberta Sonnino, to speak at the United Nations on issues of urban / rural food supply relationships and specifically how food producing regions can be reoriented towards supplying cities.

Dr. Ana Moragues is researcher in School of Geography and Planning Cardiff University. She holds an European PhD from the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain. Her research interests revolve mainly around sustainable agri-food systems, having developed most of her work in Mediterranean European countries and Latin America.  She started her research career tackling aspects of sustainable rural development, looking at farmers' strategies, collective action and the dynamics of civic food networks. These food networks allowed her to analyse urban and rural linkages, leading  to integrate urban food into her research portfolio. She also interested in food governance, having conducted studies with social movements and more recently analysing the emergence and evolution of urban food strategies. Engagement is also central to her research work, having participated in food movements and also being involved in participatory-action research and knowledge brokerage projects.

Dr. Roberta Sonnino holds a Laurea degree from the University of Rome in Italy and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Kansas in the USA, where she attended as a Fullbright Fellow from 1996 to 2003. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Policy and Planning at the School of City and Regional Planning, where she has been involved in a number of research projects on agri-food and sustainable development. Over the past four years, Dr. Sonnino has published extensively from her research on local food, rural development and sustainable public procurement. She recently sat on the advisory panel for the Scottish National Food and Drink Strategy.

Arthur Getz is former Director of Global Policy Change and Food Systems Advocacy at Heifer International and is currently working towards his PhD.
